Working with industry to evolve the Enquiry Services
The services provide important industry data that supports key processes, such as switching energy suppliers and resolving customer queries. When the services work well, they create a smoother, more reliable experience for everyone using the energy market.
As demand for these services grows and more organisations need access to industry data, we’re updating the services to make sure they remain reliable, consistent and ready to meet future market needs.
The Enquiry Services Evolution project brings together improvements to both the Gas Enquiry Service (GES) and the Electricity Enquiry Service (EES). The aim is to provide one consistent experience for users across both gas and electricity through a coordinated, cross-fuel approach.
Our approach
We are updating the Enquiry Services to take advantage of improvements in technology, cybersecurity, resilience, availability, and service delivery. This will be done with minimal impact to data interfaces.
The current services have supported the market well, but they are becoming harder to update and improve. By modernising them, we can maintain the reliable service users expect while making it easier to introduce future improvements as industry needs change. The project covers both the Gas Enquiry Service and the Electricity Enquiry Service. Our aim is to create a more consistent experience for users across both gas and electricity.
Gas goes first. We will start with the Gas Enquiry Service because it has been operating reliably since 2022, making it the best place to begin. We will use what we learn from the gas transition to help deliver the rest of the project, reducing risk and providing a proven approach for users.
Electricity is planned alongside it. The Electricity Enquiry Service is also within the scope of this project. Decisions on how it will be delivered are expected during 2026.

What does it mean for users?
Your service stays the same. This work doesn’t change who uses the service, and it doesn’t change the data you get. We will maintain the same data interfaces. You’ll keep getting the same data, the same way, as you do now.
Initially, the change is about how enquiry data is stored and accessed behind the scenes. Beyond that, it is about improving the user experience and providing the headroom needed to accommodate future services and new industry entrants.
How does it benefit industry?
The Enquiry Service are an essential industry service which must evolve to meet changing demands and to ensure it continues to be fit for purpose. The new services will deliver:
- A modern, flexible platform that is easier to expand and maintain, using up-to-date digital technologies.
- Better security to protect data, maintain GDPR compliance, and keep systems safe from cyber threats.
- Greater reliability, with fewer planned outages and better service availability.
- Optimised performance, particularly during busy periods.
- Better value for the industry and consumers.
- Greater flexibility for the future by using widely available technology and protecting industry-owned intellectual property.
- Better alignment of customers’ registration records across both gas and electricity.

Thank you to everyone who took part. Your feedback has helped shape the next stage of this work.
