Industry event: Strengthening the response to energy theft

On 10 July 2025, we held a dedicated event on Energy Theft, led by our Director of Strategy & Development, Jon Dixon, and kindly hosted by Cadent Gas. This event brought together leaders from across the retail energy sector to address one of the industry’s most persistent and often hidden challenges: protecting communities from the dangers of energy theft.

Progress from the Energy Theft Unit

Aiyesha Andrade, our Senior Service Delivery Manager, shared an update on the progress of the Energy Theft Unit (ETU) and Referral Assessment Service (RAS). Both initiatives aim to tackle energy crime head-on and address the serious safety risks posed by meter tampering and illegal connections.

Insights from Cadent and interactive workshops

Cadent Gas delivered a powerful overview of the challenges they face on the ground, highlighting how media campaigns are being used to raise awareness while presenting compelling case studies to illustrate their impact.

BH&P delivered an insightful update on the behavioural and persona-led strategies driving the successful Stay Energy Safe campaigns. Attendees then participated in an interactive workshop, where they discussed five scenarios centred on awareness, deterrence, education, reporting, and amplification.

Technical focus and forward planning

The afternoon shifted focus to technical and regulatory developments, with Elexon leading a session on Issue 117 Incentivising Correction of Settlement Post-Theft. A sector-wide working group then convened to discuss the proposed White Paper: Energy Theft Reduction, generating both practical solutions and forward-looking ideas, with a view to that paper being published for consultation in August 2025.

The event concluded with a Q&A panel, rounding off a valuable and collaborative event.

Thank you to all our speakers and attendees.
