About Tariff Interoperability

Tariff Interoperability will make tariff pricing data easier to access, share, and use across the retail energy market.

The Tariff Interoperability API Technical Specification defines a common standard for exchanging tariff information. This will enable new services, improve transparency, and give consumers greater control over their energy use.

DESNZ and RECCo are developing the Tariff Interoperability Arrangements to support innovation, strengthen consumer protection, and help deliver broader market reform.

About the consultation

DESNZ has published the Tariff Interoperability Arrangements Consultation as part of the Smart Secure Electricity Systems Programme.

The proposals introduce a new obligation on Electricity Suppliers to make pricing data available in a standardised format. This is a key step in enabling consumer-led flexibility by automating the connection of Energy Smart Appliances to price signals, helping consumers save money on their electricity bills.

The consultation runs until 20 January 2026 and seeks feedback on:

  • Scope and structure of the arrangements
  • Tariff data to be included
  • Balancing innovation with consumer protection
  • Draft REC Schedule, licence condition changes, and technical specification updates

Full consultation materials — including the proformaletter, and annexes — are available on our Tariff Interoperability Project web page and on the REC Portal.
